more, taxing more, regulating more, if you will, trickle down government would work. >> president obama sounded a familiar alarm. warning of romney's been there done that economics. >> the approach that governor romney is talking about is the same sales pitch that was made in 2001 and 2003. we ended up with the slowest job growth in 50 years. >> whether it was health care, jobs, or medicare, it was romney who stood out for his aggressive ste. >> i just don't know how the president could have come into office facing 23 million people out of work, rising unemployment, an economic crisis at the kitchen table, and spend his energy and passion for two years fighting for obama care. >> the president made his points in a slower, more laid back, often looking down, sometimes appearing disengaged. it's not that he didn't try to rip apart romney's economic plan. >> that kind of top-down economics where folks at the top are doing well, so the average person making $3 million is getting a $250,000 tax break while middle class families are burdened further. >> romney was determined to go toe to toe.

entitlement that they didn't pay for. and then they added a $1 trillion tax cut for the very wealthy on top of that. now, they -- those are the facts. the end result of all that was by the time we were elected they had in eight years doubled the national debt, that clock, doubled it and in addition to that they had the slowest job, private job growth since world war ii under this policy. and by the time the president sat down behind that famous desk the resolute in noble office within a week of sitting down our economists told us mr. president you're going to have to deal with a $1 trillion debt this year because there's nothing you can do about it. the budget was passed back october. and so ladies and gentlemen so much for their credibility on the debt, but what did it produce for us? it produced the great recession all these things they did in doubling national debt and these massive tax cuts that absolutely eviscerated the middle class. they say we urgently want to deal with it now. basically i think my opponent says something like, you know, i don't know, he said something about he was

into a recession if the spending cuts and tax increases kick in all at once in january. that kind of uncertainty is freezing businesses from doing any hiring. >> alison kosik, thank you. "cnn newsroom" continues now with brooke baldwin. >> thank you so much. hi, everyone. i'm brooke baldwin. so exciting. seven hours and counting until the presidential debate tonight. mitt romney, he is gaining in two swing states. could this be romney's springboard? romney has whittled the president's lead, take a look. he's whittled the president's lead in the two percentage points in virginia. this is according to a poll released today by marist college, the wall street journal and also nbc news. two-point lead for obama, that's down five points last month. keep in mind we're talking virginia, that's 13 electoral votes there. and check it out, similar story for you in florida. 29 electoral votes there. now, a one-point, one-point lead for obama, down from four points in september. we should mention here that poll shows the president still with the seven-point lead in ohio. we can't forget about ohio. but speak

pay taxes, they see me working hard and doing things i should be doing as a citizen. >> what this comes down to really is do you think voting say right or a privilege? if voting is a right, people who have paid their debt to society should be allowed to vote. demographics are changing, more of this rhetoric that voting is not a right but a privilege. it should really be outrageous to all of us. the very foundation of our country is that voting is a right. vermont and maine probably have the two smallest black populations in the country. unfortunately race has been a big part of this in the state of virginia, where she's from, when the law was put in place, when it was embed into the state constitution back in 1902, the person who was doing that was actually talking from the floor of that convention and i quote, because of this plan, darky will be zeroed out as a factor in our state's politics in five years. it was a very sordid racial had history. >> you're saying this is of a race issue than anything else? is that what you're saying? or is it -- >> i'm saying at its very ori

, the president's approach is attractive to people who are not paying taxes because, frankly, my discussion about lowering taxes isn't as attractive to them. therefore i'm not likely to draw them into my campaign. >> but last night, romney had a complete about face. now he is denouncing that remark all together. >> clearly in a campaign with hundreds, if not thousands of speeches and question and answer sessns, now and then you're going to say something that doesn't come out right. in this case i said something that's just completely wrong. i absolutely believe, however, that my life has shown that i care about 100%. and that's been demonstrated throughout my life. and this whole campaign is about the 100%. when i become president, it will be about helping the 100%. >> cnn political editor paul steinhauser joins me now in washington. romney chose to clarify his remark on fox. no accident there perhaps. >> he was doing an interview there last night with his running mate, paul ryan. i think what you heard last night was the answer mitt romney would have given in the presidential debate wednesday ni

romney and paul ryan as, you know, against the middle class and taxing the middle class. i think joe biden is going to wrap mitt romney and paul ryan as tightly together as possible and just sort of drop the ryan plan on top it to try to implode the pair. they think that is good ground. as far as paul ryan is concerned, i think he is kind a policy wonk. his problem is he's a numbers guy, and he's up against frankly and i think both runs previous head of the republican party and michael nutter both said that joe biden is a very accessible politician. he tends to put things the way that people get it immediately. he's just got that kind of manner about him. i think that's the -- in some ways, you know, we look at the substance and style. as far as style is concerned, i think paul ryan's fear here is he's too much of a wonk sxort of throwing out numbers. you know, you can expect joe biden to say, gee, i took a look at your numbers and here's what they would do to george next door. ryan has to be careful about that kind of debate. >> the next presidential debate, you're moderating octobe

six weeks, and over and over again, you will hear my opponents talking about how bigger tax cuts and fewer regulations and that's the way to go, and since government can't do anything, it should do almost nothing. if you can't afford health care, then hope you don't get sick is their theory. if you can't afford college, borrow money from your parents. you know what? that's not who we are. i don't think government can solve all of our problems, but government is not the source of all of our problems, either. there's stuff we can do together. instead of blaming, immigrants, unions or gays or somebody for what is going on, what we need to do is pull together. we're all in thistogether. we believe that america only works when we all accept responsibility for ourselves and for our each other. that's how we create -- >> mr. obama will be on the road through wednesday's first presidential debate. mitt romney heads to colorado tomorrow where he will hold a rally and continue his preparations for wednesday's showdown in denver. he went to church this morning outside boston but held no pub

going to cut income tax rates by 20% to make up the difference by eliminating deductions in credit. is he going to get into some of these details here about how this is all going to shake out? anna, start with you. >> you know, suzanne, i don't know how much time is loued in the debate to go into real detail of a plan. certainly you can't go into detail about 59 points, but dow hope he chooses two, three, four points to really focus on, make the sale. this is his strength. it should be something that he is able to sell well. more than four million jobs have been added back into the economy since he took office. you got growth. it's been stuck at 1%, which really is pretty disastrous for a recovery. what does he have to say to convince voters that, you know what, stick with me, stick with my plan? >> well, first of all, i don't think 90 minutes is long enough for mitt romney to explain his 59-point plan. or if i can figure out if it adds up and not add up to the federal deficit. i think president obama needs to make his points very clear and concise and not try to give us too many s
